A Newborn’s vision is not perfect at birth, Newborns are more able to see black and white contrasting objects as well as the color red. Babies can best see an object that is 12 inches away, but anything farther away might be a bit blurry until their eye muscles strengthen. There are many exercises you can do with your little one to help improve their eyesight.
- Download and print some black and white contrasting cards and practice by lying your baby on their back. Then, hold the card 12 inches away from their face and have them focus, then slowly move the card to the left or to the right. If you notice your baby losing focus, bring the card back to center and start over.
- If you you don’t have a printer at home, use a paper plates and a black marker to draw your figures. Draw a bulls eye target on one, an X on another, a star on another, etc. Draw any object you wish, the idea is to get the contrasting colors to work your Baby’s eyesight.
- Try placing a solid colored object 12 inches away and see how your Baby responds to following it. You can also adjust the distance to making it a shorter distance from your Baby’s face to see if they are able to better follow it, as they improve, begin holding the object further.
- Having a mobile is also a great way to place your Baby on their back, while in a safe environment and having them focus on a moving object.
*Note*
This will be the week that your Baby will be experiencing a growth spurt, so don’t be surprised if your Baby feeds longer or more often.
