When I was a working Mom, I did not have time for cloth diapering and I gave kudos to all the Moms I knew, that did.  I admired their patience and their commitment.  It was something I actually feared because I was not sure “it was for me.”  I was most afraid of the poopy diapers.  Well, after welcoming our third baby, we decided to use cloth diapers.  The main reason was saving over $2,000.00 in the long haul and so I made sure I got prepared.  I purchased a spray pal for rinsing the inserts and covers. I also purchased a sprayer

Having The Right Tools

In all honesty, cloth diapering is so much easier, if you have the right tools and the time.  It literally takes me 2 minutes to rinse the cover and insert.  When it comes time to washing, I do not use any product to pre-treat the minor stains.  Instead, I use  the sun!  After I have washed everything, the sun is the best and safest bleach. Many Moms on social media are using Borax in their laundry load.  I simply avoid using Borax.  I don’t recommend it either. I wouldn’t even use Borax when working with children.

Some parents on social media use Borax for making slime type sensory toys and also washing.  It is very harsh and can cause serious allergic reactions.  The sun is your friend, Mommas.  I use Castile soap for my detergent without any kind of pre-treatment or fabric softener.  The fabric softener can clog up your inserts and prevent the amount of absorption.  I did some research on baby detergents and found a website that gives scientific reviews for cleaning power and if it is truly organic.  It is www.ewg.org.  I recommend you go there and check your own detergent to see what grade it got. Right now, I am using Castile soap, which rates at an “A.”

Here is a short video showing how quick and easy it is.

My Current Diaper Rash Cream Review

I purchased hello bello because, not only is it free of dyes and does not clog the pores of the inserts, for cloth diapering.  Although it is ideal for cloth diapering, I am not very keen on it.  It is very clumpy and expensive ($14).  I will continue using it until it’s gone, then I will move onto a different one.

Tips

One tip I would like to mention is that of dipping the dirty diaper in the toilet to wash.  I have seen many Mommas on social media doing this.  As a professional and a Mother, I want to highly encourage anyone (if this is your method) to please stop.  The toilet is full of fecal germs that one cannot see.  Would you drink out of the toilet?  Exactly my point.  I realize that you still put the diapers through the wash, but I just don’t see this as sanitary – at all!  Purchase a sprayer, it’s easy enough to install and is such a breeze to use.  Definitely get a spray bin, to avoid splashing and you’ll soon see how awesome the process can be.

For Moms that are breastfeeding, you can literally place poopy diapers in your washing machine because breastmilk is water based.  Once you introduce formula, use the rinsing technique.  I know it’s extra steps, as opposed to just disposing of a diaper, but really if you have doubts, be encouraged.  It’s only adding a couple of extra laundry items to your normal to do list.  I hope this is convincing enough for all you Mommas out there that have been wondering whether or not you could do cloth diapering.  The truth is, you can!

Truth Be Told

I am in no way wanting to be misunderstood here.  It is not a glorious experience.  It is downright dirty with some of the poopie diapers!  As a Mother, I am doing this to save money, avoid filling up more landfills and I’m home, so I’m able to.  This would not be an option, were I working.  I’m home and it is completely doable.  The worst part is over in a short amount of time.  Washing cloth diapers is just another laundry load that is already a part of any Parent’s routine anyway.  So, is it the worst thing about Parenting?  The answer is a huge resounding, “No!”  There are a lot more things that are worse, believe me!
